Making Bookings

Bookings can be made in two ways. Ideally send us an email, or, if this is not possible, leave a message on the social centre number (0151 703 6806) and we'll get back to you. When contacting us please let us know:

  • The date and the time of the meeting.
  • The kind of meeting you're holding (group, public, fundraiser or weekend).
  • Which of the rooms we have you'll need.
  • Your equipment needs (projector, chairs, PA etc).
  • Whether the meeting is public or closed and whether you'd be comfortable with another group using the space at the same time.

Space and Equipment Available

We have two rooms available as meeting space - a larger main room and a smaller back room.

Main Room

The main room is equipped with a digital projector, DVD and video player and PA (PA currently unavailable, sorry), all of which are available for use should you need them. The room will hold around 30-40 people seated and 70-80 people standing.

Back Room

The back room is smaller, ideal for most group meetings and comfortably holds about 10-15 people seated.

Our Booking Policy - Who Can Use the Space

We created the social centre to be part of efforts to bring about a fair, free and sustainable society - one without hierarchy, discrimination, or the exploitation of people, animals and the planet for profit. We believe this is only possible through the direct action of ordinary people against capitalism & the state.

The centre exists to support anyone acting to defend themselves and their communities against attacks by business and government, locally and globally, and those acting in solidarity with them, through direct action, campaigning work, education, and sharing skills and resources.

The social centre is not just a meeting space; it is intended as an example. We work non-hierarchically, we maintain our independence as far as is possible, we claim to represent no one but ourselves and seek to facilitate, not control, the resistance of others. We expect respect for each other; the centre should be a place of diversity and
safety for all - discrimination, privilege and violence will not be tolerated.

We prioritise groups who share this vision and groups who are the most excluded, who have least access to resources and meeting spaces yet need them most to fight back against oppression.

Whilst we seek to be broadly inclusive and do not demand explicit commitments to these principles from groups using the centre, we will refuse groups who stand against any of this.

All individuals are welcome.

Pricing Structure

At the moment we have to charge for the use of the rooms, our income is not secure as yet and unfortunately we need to ask people who use the space to contribute what they can.

Pricing is based on the type of booking and on the finances of the group making the booking. There are four types of booking: a private group meeting, a public meeting, a fundraiser and a weekend. We also accept regular bookings.

We draw a distinction between funded groups, wherever that funding comes from, and unfunded groups. Unfunded groups pay half the rate of funded groups.

We are, however, flexible and if any of the prices quoted are too much for your group then please send in the booking anyway and just tell us, there should be something we can do and charges can be waived or lowered where necessary.

Group Meeting

Organising meetings, regular group meetings, activist meetings and so on. These would usually be a regular booking.

For group meetings there are two rooms available, the larger front room and the smaller back room (see photos - get photos for it), meaning that we can host two group meetings at the same time. The cost is standard between the two rooms.

Please let us know your preference for the larger or the smaller room. As a rough guide, the back room can hold a meeting of around 12-15 people, the larger room 30 and upwards depending on how it's arranged.

If you need your meeting to be completely closed and would prefer not to share the space with another group please specify that in your booking. In this case you may need to be more flexible with dates and timings in order to accommodate our regular bookings.

Fundraiser

Any event advertised as open to the public which does charge for entry.

Any booking that needs the space for several days, at the moment this would almost certainly have to be a weekend, although please get in touch if you have other needs. e.g.: bookfairs, conferences or AGMs.

Our Commitments and Your Commitments

Things we expect of groups using the space

  • The group set up the space themselves and put it back afterwards.
  • The group is responsible for keeping order and dealing with those kind of problems.
  • The group takes responsibility for answering the bell or watching the door themselves, admitting only people for their own event/meeting.
  • Show respect for other tenants in the building and keep people out of other areas of the building.

Things we will do

  • At least one member of the social centre collective will be present at all times, although the privacy of meetings will be respected.
  • We will open up and lock up the space.
  • We will help operate any equipment that we supply.
