DTSTART;TZID=Europe/Guernsey:20071102T193000
DTEND;TZID=Europe/Guernsey:20071102T220000
DESCRIPTION:Visiting speakers from Environmental Network for Central
America talk about their recent trip to Honduras and Nicaragua to make
links with community projects. All welcome!\n\nThe purpose of study tour
was primarily to establish links with organisations in Honduras\, find
out / learn about their struggles\, opportunities for funding small
projects in future.\n\nThe talk will concentrate on the organisations /
 community groups / environments we visited\, namely:\n \nClinica Xochilt
(Nicaragua) - A women's heath clinic which also helps banana and sugar
cane plantation workers affected by the illneses caused by pesticide use.
They work with very little equipment and support poor communities that
would otherwise have no access to healthcare.\n \nPalm Oil Plantations
(Honduras) - We visited Fundacion Prolansate who look after 3 national
parks on the carribean coast of Honduras. We were able to visit the palm
oil plantations and speak to farmers who have switched to growing plam
oil trees. The area would otherwise be rainforest with a very valuable
bio-diversity. Historically this coastal area of Honduras has been home
to the Garifuna people\, an ethnic group formed over 200 years ago when
escaped slaves from the British West Indies mixed with Carib groups along
the coast of Central America.\n \nCOPINH (La Esperanza\, Honduras) -
COPINH stands for Civic Council Of Popular and Indigenous Organisations.
La Esperanza (Intibuca state of Honduras) is home to the Lenca indigenous
group and COPINH stand up for the rights of indigenous people. They are
very active and among other activities they run a community radio station
called La Voz Lenca (the Voice of the Lenca) and seem to have a fantastic
non-hierarchical way of working and are very much a grass routes
organisation.\n \nThe Movimiento Ambientalista de Olancho (Honduras) -
The MAO are a grass routes organisation which supports campesino
communities affected by the damaging effects of illegal and excessive
logging in the Olancho area of Honduras. The community groups have
suffered 7 assassinations in the last 5 years (2 of which occured in
December 2007). The assassinations are coordinated by the local logging
companies with the collusion of local government officials. There is a
lot of money to be made in logging\; but the local farming communities
suffer from erosion of top soil\, the drying up of streams and natural
spring water etc.\n \nThe Permaculture Institute of El Salvador (El
Salvador) - The permaculture institute are part of the farmer to farmer
movement and they help to promote organic agriculture to poor farming
communities in El Salvador. Their aims are to improve peoples working
conditions by reducing their reliance on agro-chemicals.

version of her fierce anti-war story When Bill Danced The War. Musicians
Shaun Blezard and Keith Jafrate have created a strange\, powerful hybrid

concerns the horrors witnessed by her Choctaw father Bill\, a sailor who
was involved in 3 American wars.\n\n /Sarah Murphy spins her tales of
the tragedies of everyday life the\n way Bob Dylan used to write songs.
In her beguiling\, savage and\n sometimes witty style\, she prods her

DESCRIPTION:News From Nowhere Bookshop welcomes Dr Mike Homfray to talk
about his new book \"Provincial Queens: Gay & Lesbian Community in the
North-West of England\" (Peter Lang\, 2007). All welcome. The book will
be available at a special discount at this event (usual retail price
£34)\n\nWhat do we mean by 'the gay community'? What is the state of
'gay and lesbian politics' in contemporary Britain? Have 'communitarian'
ideas provided a framework for change? And what is the view from outside
the capital? Recent years have seen both significant legal and social
reform benefiting lesbian and gay people under a government whose
communitarian political credo has stressed the importance of 'community'
and 'rights and responsibilities'. What effect has this had? What is the
influence of identity\, space and location\, politics\, and community
itself? On the basis of qualitative research with gay men and lesbians
working for change in Liverpool and Manchester\, the author examines
whether gay and lesbian equality and the idea of 'the gay community' can
be understood and furthered within a framework of communitarian ideas.

DTSTART;TZID=Europe/Guernsey:20080106T140000
DTEND;TZID=Europe/Guernsey:20080106T180000
DESCRIPTION:Film-lovers and soup addicts are invited to join us at
Liverpool Social Centre (Next To Nowhere) on Bold Street at 2pm this
coming Sunday January 6th for a showing of 'This Is England' accompanied
by bowls of vegan soup at a very reasonable price. If there is sufficient
demand we may show another film afterwards\n\nTHIS IS ENGLAND
 (2006)\nRoland Rat\, Margaret Thatcher\; Rubik's Cubes\, the Royal
 Wedding\; aerobics\, skinheads... It's 1983\, and the schools are
breaking up for summer. Shaun is 12 and a bit of a loner\, growing up
with his mum in a grim coastal town\, his dad killed fighting in the
Falklands\nWar. On his way home from school where he's been tormented all
day for wearing flares\, he runs into a group of skinheads\, who against
expectations turn out to be friendly and take him under their wing. Soon
Shaun discovers parties\, girls and snappy dressing\, and finds\nsome
role models in Woody\, Milky and the rest of the gang. But when an
older\, overtly racist skinhead returns home from prison\, the easy
camaraderie of the group is broken\, and Shaun is drawn into much more
uncomfortable territory. Based largely on his own experience as a
youngster\, this is Shane Meadows' most mature and fully realised film.
Handling the complexities of masculinity\, violence and race with
sensitivity and a lightness of touch\, it's hard to imagine a film that
would better capture the mood of the time\, or that could\nhave any
greater an understanding of the allure of being part of a gang.

 in Italy\, near Venice - pollution & health hazards - in the 1970s. (1hr
18 mins)\n\nIt is the story of a wave of struggles that shook the
industrial and political landscapes of Italy in the 60s and 70s.A story
told by those who took part in Porto Marghera's Autonomous Assembly. The
Assembly not only coordinated the struggles in the factories\,but also
 squatted houses\,formed neighbourhood committees\,organised price
reductions in supermarkets\,and together with thousands of workers burned
their electricity bills. They were also the leading element in the fight
against environmental pollution in the Veneto region.

NHS patients and local communities have been linking up with nurses\,
doctors and other health care workers to meet\, march\, protest and lobby
as they fight to stop further closures and cuts in local NHS services.
Beds\, wards and even whole hospitals are closing down. Thousands of
health workers' jobs are being axed.\n\nBut alongside the cuts\, an
unprecedented process of privatisation is under way: vital services and
precious NHS resources are being handed over to the private sector\,
including companies run for profit for shareholders here and overseas.
Now is the time to fight back to Keep Our NHS Public!

DESCRIPTION:Group meeting\n\nALTER aims to socialise the rent value of
land\, so that the community benefits from land values\, rather than
individuals. This would lead to a massive redistribution of wealth as
currently 70% of the land in Britain is owned by just 1% of the
population. This policy would replace the Council Tax system (which falls
so heavily on the lower paid) and raise the income tax threshold so
lower paid workers are freed from the burden of income tax.

 Brighton-based arms manufacturers EDO.\n\nIn 2004 a group of Brighton
peace campaigners began to bang pot and pans outside their local arms
manufacturers EDO MBM in disgust of their part in the Iraq war. This has
grown into the Smash EDO campaign\, which has cost the company millions\,
been the subject of large scale police operations and has tested the
right to protest in the UK.\n\nUsing activist\, police and CCTV footage
plus interviews with those involved in the campaign\, 'On The Verge'
tells the story of one of the most persistent and imaginative campaigns
to emerge out of the UK's anti-war movement and direct action scene.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for vegan soup & cakes from 2pm\, followed by the
 film at 3pm. Free entry\, food by donation\, all welcome!\n\nThis week's
film: \"Themroc\" (FRANCE 1973)\n\nThemroc is a man who lives a
repetitive life\, constantly dealing with the everyday struggles of work
and no play\, until he breaks from his routine to turn in to a free
man/monster who breaks down all barriers (quite literally) and brings a
feeling of liberty to his community despite the police trying their best
to stop him. When the pressures of the daily grind get too much for
Themroc and he is reprimanded by his employer\, he snaps. When he gets
home\, he sets about sealing himself into his bedroom and smashing down
the outside wall to create a cave.\nHis anarchy is catching - soon his
neighbours from across the street are doing the same and it's not long
before the media and the police are taking an interest. Because he is
breaking the rules of society\, the authorities must find a way of
containing Themroc before he starts a trend.\n\nThere are some very
memorable scenes\, such as the community barbecue of a policeman
(although the carcass shown is amusingly a pig's) and the scene where
Themroc knocks a hole in his apartment wall and starts throwing all of
his mod cons out into the street.\n\nIn this alternately disturbing and
humorous film\, controversial director Claude Faraldo paints a bleak
picture suggesting that a reversion to the Stone Age may be preferable to
living the stale sanitised existence which modern society offers. It is
clearly a product of its time – the late 1960s and early 1970s was a
period of great societal and cultural upheaval in France. This sense of
rebellion and the embracing of anarchistic notions made its presence felt
in many French films of this period\, and Themroc is probably the most
famous example of this. This film is hilarious and inspiring. It captures
the absurdity of everyday life in a repressive social order\, and
portrays the infectious\npoetic revolt of one man who 'goes mad' against
authority in every form. The film is in a way a dream-like rendition of
the Situationist vision of changing life.\n\nWith no intelligible
dialogue (all characters speak in either a non-recognisable corruption of
French or neanderthal grunts)\, the film relies entirely on its visuals
for impact. It is obvious that words and profound lessons are not needed
in a film in order for it to pass its messages across toits viewers.
Themroc is a movie with no dialogue so that it can be seen by any\nhuman
around the world and still understand how authority has separated us and
divided us in order to use us. More than that\, Themroc examines the
limitations modern society has set for us thus limiting our life
 experience and happiness.\n\n\n

 welcome!\n\n'FAVELA RISING' (BRAZIL 2005)\n\nFavela Rising documents a
man and a movement\, a city divided and a favela (Brazilian squatter
settlement) united. Haunted by the murders of his family and many of his
friends\, Anderson Sá is a former drug-trafficker who turns social
revolutionary in Rio de Janeiro's most feared slum. Through hip-hop
music\, the rhythms of the street\, and Afro-Brazilian dance he rallies
his community to counteract the violent oppression enforced by teenage
drug armies and sustained by corrupt police. At the dawn of liberation\,
just as collective mobility is overcoming all odds and Anderson's
grassroots Afro Reggae movement is at the height of its success\, a
tragic accident threatens to silence the movement forever.\n\n \n\nLike
‘City Of God’\, Anderson Sa talks about how the people of the favelas
were desensitized because death was an every day occurrence. He talks
about the police corruption\, and how the communities were so immobilized
by drugs and gangs that you couldn't visit family members in other
Favelas. Unlike ‘City of God’\, Anderson Sa's grassroots movement
AfroReggae provides solutions to the anger and hopelessness and
transforms the hopeless and most times angry youth (girls as well as
boys) into vibrant\, viable\, caring community loving
individuals.\n\nFavela Rising is a documentary about the slums of Rio\,
the favelas\, specifically the most violent one\, Vigário Geral.
According to this film\, a lot more kids have died violently in Rio's
favelas over the last decade or so than in Israel/Palestine during the
same period -- a fact astonishing if true\, which shows how
under-recognized this social problem is in the rest of the world. This is
an important topic\, especially for those who see hope in grassroots
efforts to marshal the neediest and most at risk through a vibrant
cultural program.\n\n\nThe performance arts aren't everything\, just the
focal point. GCAR is also a movement for broader social change Gathering
public awareness through such performances\, the centers also provide
 training in information (newspaper\, radio\, Internet\, e-mail links)\,
hygiene and sex education\, to seek to bridge gaps between rich and
poor\, black and white\, and to offer workshops in audio-visual work\,
including production of documentaries. The program is currently active in
four other favelas.\n\n \n\nFor once a story of hope highlighted over the
tragic reality our youth face. Favela Rising draws one into a scary\,
unsafe and unfair world and shows through beautiful color and moving
music how one man and his dedicated friends choose not to accept that
world and change it through action and art. An entertaining\,
 interesting\, emotional\, aesthetically beautiful film.

DESCRIPTION:Delicious vegan food available from 4pm followed by a film at
 5pm. Free entry\, food by donation\, all welcome!\n\nCZECH DREAM
(2005)\n\nEveryone with any opinion about advertising (which\, in this
hyper-mediated world\, is pretty much anyone) has at least a half-aware
understanding of the ability of advertising to affect their lives. Czech
Dream is a movie about just that\, as two student filmmakers design an ad
campaign for a product that doesn't even exist\, a hypermarket that
advertises its opening day by saying such things as\, 'Don't come!' and
'Don't spend!' Two thousand people arrive anyway.\n\n \n\nThis
documentary is most effective in its complete simplicity. The filmmakers
and crew take no time trying to hide their judgment or view from the
movie - the idea here is NOT to create a so-called objective documentary
but to show much more directly and personally the power of advertising
over people. This power is something everyone perceives\, but not as many
people really believe in\, until something like this occurs and two
thousand people are left on a field with nothing in it but a
banner.\n\nCzech Dream is full of wonderful details. Vit and Filip spend
little time detailing the actual process\, focusing more on the message
that the ads are trying to create\, and allows most of the film's time to
settle on people's comments about it. The self-serving dialog of the
 advertisers ('Oh\, I think this is a horrible thing\, but we're
professionals and so we'll do it. It's like a doctor who has to save a
rapist' 'I like being an advertiser\, you know\, I like going out with my
friends and knowing that I am the one that moves the world' 'Filmmakers
lie\, advertisers don't lie') is well foiled by the reactions of the
crowd of people who actually arrived\, whose opinions range from 'Hey\, I
know what this is\, this is two people trying to get us outside for once!
Let's have a picnic!' to 'I'm going to take you to court for this!' and
who\, amazingly\, take very little time in connecting the event to its
political meaning.\n\n \n\nAfter the Velvet Revolution of 1989\, which
led to the formation of the Czech Republic\, and Slovakia\, people
basically wanted the same things that their neighbours in the West wanted:
basic creature comforts. A lot of Czechs actually became angry at the
makers of this movie - they felt betrayed - but it also shows very well
how new western style economies can be vulnerable and that appearances
rule our lives. The dream the two students made up for people was just
 like a bubble. Eventually it would disappear.\n\n \n\nThis is a film I
would recommend to anyone who is familiar with pranksters such as 'The
 Yes Men'.

DESCRIPTION:Free food & information day\, all welcome. Part of a
national weekend of action on food & climate change.\n\nThe connection
between climate change and the food we eat has been well documented in
the national press recently and with a global food crisis looming\, our
choice of diet will have an increasing impact not only on the planet but
on other people around the world.\n\nMany people understand the
environmental issues connected to food\; that a highly\nprocessed\, meat
based diet is carbon intensive whilst locally bought plant-based (vegan)
organic foods have a much lower impact\, so these events will focus on
showing people how to go about making such changes and that it need not
be a sacrifice. By thinking about and taking control of what we eat\,
instead of reaching for a ready meal\, we can not only improve both our
own health and that of the planet\, but also begin to address issues of
global food inequality and animal welfare\, and save money too!\n\n
Network for Climate Action in co-operation with the Rising Tide Network
and the Camp for Climate Action are calling for Days of Action on Climate
Change throughout the year. So far this year days have been themed around
false capitalist solutions\, biofuels (and their associated problems) and
a Fossil Fools day on the 1st of May highlighting the foolishness of the
fossil fuels industry’s failure to change
 course.\nwww.daysofclimateaction.org.uk

time-pound system. It supports a gift economy which is fundamentally
different from a cash economy. The system is based on human capital -
your skills and energies - and on trust.\n\nUnlike the cash economy your
capital is not restricted to the numbers on your bank statement. So long
as you have something to offer another person (and everyone does)\, you
have capital. Since participants don't need to compete for scarce
resources\, it is a fundamentally cooperative trading endeavor.\n\nThe
goods and services you can obtain are not limited to a single trading
partner\, as with barter\, but rather encompass the offerings of the
entire trading network. You can see the goods and services currently
available in our Members Directory. You must become a member in order to
trade. See How Do I Join for information on joining Liverpool

has grown into the Smash EDO campaign\, which has cost the company
millions\, been the subject of large scale police operations and has

DESCRIPTION:Merseyside Keep Our NHS Public present a screening of Michael
 Moore's \"Sicko\" (Film to start at 8pm)\n\nThe words \"health care\" and
\"comedy\" aren't usually found in the same sentence\, but in Academy
Award winning filmmaker Michael Moore's new movie 'SiCKO\,' they go
together hand in (rubber) glove.\n\nOpening with profiles of several
ordinary Americans whose lives have been disrupted\, shattered\, and—in
some cases—ended by health care catastrophe\, the film makes clear that
the crisis doesn't only affect the 47 million uninsured
citizens—millions of others who dutifully pay their premiums often get
strangled by bureaucratic red tape as well.\n\nAfter detailing just how
the system got into such a mess (the short answer: profits and Nixon)\,
we are whisked around the world\, visiting countries including Canada\,
Great Britain and France\, where all citizens receive free medical
benefits. Finally\, Moore gathers a group of 9/11 heroes – rescue
workers now suffering from debilitating illnesses who have been denied
medical attention in the US. He takes them to a most unexpected place\,
and in addition to finally receiving care\, they also engage in some
unexpected diplomacy.\n\nWhile Moore's 'SiCKO' follows the trailblazing
path of previous hit films\, the Oscar-winning BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE and
all-time box-office documentary champ FAHRENHEIT 9/11\, it is also
something very different for Michael Moore. 'SiCKO' is a
straight-from-the-heart portrait of the crazy and sometimes cruel U.S.
health care system\, told from the vantage of everyday people faced with
extraordinary and bizarre challenges in their quest for basic health
coverage.\n\nIn the tradition of Mark Twain or Will Rogers\, 'SiCKO' uses
humor to tell these compelling stories\, leading the audience conclude
that an alternative system is the only possible answer.

DESCRIPTION:Film about the justice for the Move 9 - political prisoners
for 30 years in the USA. Letter-writing in support of getting them
released.\n\n(PLEASE NOTE: this event is instead of this month's
Merseyside Anarchists meeting)\n\n\"The MOVE Organization is a family of
 strong\, serious\, deeply committed revolutionaries founded by a wise\,
perceptive\, strategically minded Black man named JOHN AFRICA. The
principle of our belief is explained in a collection of writings we call
\"The Guidelines\,\" authored by JOHN AFRICA. ... JOHN AFRICA taught us
that Life is the priority. Nothing is more important or as important as
Life\, the force that keeps us alive. All life comes from one source\,
from God\, MOM NATURE\, MOMA. Each individual life is dependent on every
other life\, and all life has a purpose\, so all living beings\, things
that move\, are equally important\, whether they are human beings\,
 dogs\, birds\, fish\, trees\, ants\, weeds\, rivers\, wind or rain. To
stay healthy and strong\, life must have clean air \, clear water and
pure food. If derived of these things\, life will cycle to the next
level\, or as the system says\, \"die.\"\n\n\n\"The MOVE 9 are innocent
men and women who have been in prison since August 8\, 1978\, following a
massive police attack on us at our home in Powelton Village
(Philadelphia). This was seven years before the government dropped a bomb
 on MOVE\, killing 11 people\, including 5 babies. The August 8\, 1978
police attack on MOVE followed years of police brutality against MOVE and
was a major military operation carried out by the Philadelphia police
department under orders of then-mayor\, Frank Rizzo\, whose reputation
for racism and brutality is well known ... During this attack\, heavy
equipment was used to tear down the fence surrounding our home\, and cops
filled our home with enough tear gas to kill us and our babies\, while
SWAT teams covered every possible exit. We were all in the basement of
our home\, where we had 10 thousand pounds of water pressure per minute
directed at us from 4 fire department water cannons (for a total of 40
thousand pounds of water pressure per minute). As the basement filled
with nearly six feet of water we had to hold our babies and animals above
the rising water so they wouldn't drown. Suddenly shots rang out (news
reporters and others know the shots came from a house at 33rd and Baring
St.\, not our home\, because they actually saw the man shooting) and
bullets immediately filled the air as police through-out the area opened
fire on us. Officer James Ramp\, who was standing above us on
street-level and facing our home\, was killed by a single bullet that
struck him on a downward angle. This alone makes it impossible for MOVE
to have killed Ramp\, since we were below street level\, in the basement.
MOVE adults came out of the house carrying our children through clouds of
tear gas\, we were beat and arrested. Television cameras actually filmed
the vicious beating of our brother Delbert Africa (3 of the 4 cops that
beat Delbert went to trial on minor charges). Despite the photographic
evidence\, the trial judge (Stanley Kubacki) refused to let the jury
render a verdict and himself acquitted the cops by directed order. Nine
of us were charged with murder and related charges for the death of James
Ramp. Within a few hours of our arrest\, our home (which is supposed to
be the \"scene of the crime\" and therefore evidence) was deliberately
destroyed\, demolished\, by city officials when they were legally
obligated to preserve all evidence\, but we were held for trial anyway.
We went to trial before Judge Edward Malmed who convicted all nine of us
of third degree murder (while admitting that he didn't have \"the
faintest idea\" who killed Ramp) and sentenced each of us to 30 - 100
 years in prison. \"

point to the valley between Tara and Skryne as an area of paramount
importance throughout the history of Tara.” Yet it is through the very
heart of this landscape\, that Meath County Council\, the NRA and the

DESCRIPTION:News From Nowhere Bookshop presents a talk & booksigning by
Uri Gordon\, author of Anarchy Alive! Anti-authoritarian Politics from
Practice to Theory (Pluto Press\, 2007\, £15.99). All
welcome.\n\nAnarchist politics are at the heart of today's most vibrant
and radical social movements. From squatted social centres and community
gardens to acts of sabotage and raucous summit blockades\, anarchist
groups and networks are spreading an ethos of direct action\,
non-hierarchical organizing and self-liberation that has redefined
revolutionary struggle for the 21st century.\n\nAnarchy Alive! is a
fascinating\, in-depth look at the practice and theory of contemporary
anarchism. Uri Gordon draws on his activist experience and on
interviews\, discussions and a vast selection of recent literature to
explore the activities\, cultures and agendas shaping today's explosive
anti-authoritarian revival. Anarchy Alive! also addresses some of the
most tense debates in the contemporary movement\, using a theory based on
practice to provocatively reshape anarchist discussions of leadership\,
violence\, technology and nationalism.\n\nThis is the ideal book for
anyone looking for a fresh\, informed and critical engagement with
anarchism\, as a mature and dynamic political force in the age of
globalisation.\n\nUri Gordon has been tear-gassed in several major
European cities. An Israeli activist and journalist\, he wrote his PhD on
anarchist politics at Oxford while organising with the Dissent! network\,
Indymedia\, Peoples' Global Action and Anarchists Against the
 Wall.\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Sorry\, this event has been cancelled & will be rescheduled
 for a future
 date.\n-------------------------------------------------\n\n‘An
Inconvenient Truth’\n\nHumanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb. If
the vast majority of the world's scientists are right\, we have just ten
years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into
 a tail-spin of epic destruction involving extreme weather\, floods\,
droughts\, epidemics and killer heat waves beyond anything we have ever
experienced.\n\nIf that sounds like a recipe for serious gloom and doom
-- think again. From director Davis Guggenheim comes the Sundance Film
Festival hit\, AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH\, which offers a passionate and
inspirational look at one man's fervent crusade to halt global warming's
deadly progress in its tracks by exposing the myths and misconceptions
that surround it. That man is former Vice President Al Gore\, who\, in
the wake of defeat in the 2000 election\, re-set the course of his life
to focus on a last-ditch\, all-out effort to help save the planet from
irrevocable change. In this eye-opening and poignant portrait of Gore and
his \"traveling global warming show\,\" Gore also proves himself to be
one of the most misunderstood characters in modern American public life.
Here he is seen as never before in the media - funny\, engaging\, open
and downright on fire about getting the surprisingly stirring truth about
what he calls our \"planetary emergency\" out to ordinary citizens before
 it's too late.\nhttp://www.climatecrisis.net/\n\nOne of a series of

DESCRIPTION:\nSORRY\, THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED - NEW DATE TO BE
 CONFIRMED\n\n---------------------------------------\n\nThe end of
Surburbia: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of The American Dream\n\nSince
World War II North Americans have invested much of their newfound wealth
in suburbia. It has promised a sense of space\, affordability\, family
life and upward mobility. As the population of suburban sprawl has
exploded in the past 50 years\, so too the suburban way of life has
become embedded in the American consciousness. Suburbia\, and all it
promises\, has become the American Dream. But as we enter the 21st
century\, serious questions are beginning to emerge about the
sustainability of this way of life. With brutal honesty and a touch of
irony\, The End of Suburbia explores the American Way of Life and its
prospects as the planet approaches a critical era\, as global demand for
fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply. World Oil Peak and the inevitable
decline of fossil fuels are upon us now\, some scientists and policy
makers argue in this documentary. The consequences of inaction in the
face of this global crisis are enormous. What does Oil Peak mean for
North America? As energy prices skyrocket in the coming years\, how will
the populations of suburbia react to the collapse of their dream? Are
today's suburbs destined to become the slums of tomorrow? And what can be
done NOW\, individually and collectively\, to avoid The End of
 Suburbia?\n\nhttp://www.endofsuburbia.com/\n\nOne of a series of

DESCRIPTION:The Power of community: ‘How Cuba Survived Peak
Oil’\n\nWhen the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990\, Cuba's economy went
into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food
by 80 percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships
and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people
during this difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned from a
highly mechanized\, industrial agricultural system to one using organic
methods of farming and local\, urban gardens. It is an unusual look into
the Cuban culture during this economic crisis\, which they call \"The
Special Period.\" The film opens with a short history of Peak Oil\, a
term for the time in our history when world oil production will reach its
all-time peak and begin to decline forever. Cuba\, the only country that
has faced such a crisis – the massive reduction of fossil fuels – is
an example of options and hope.\n\nhttp:
